A list of jobs in the sports industry, curated by Olivia Witherite, who is focused on creating more lanes for diverse hires

Last week, I spoke on a podcast (dropping soon) about sports + creativity + burnout. It’s an important topic to me as a people manager.

One trend I’ve noticed is that younger people are often better about setting boundaries and creating work/life balance. I find that awesome, and I’ve learned so much from my Gen Z employees.

That said, to see real change in the sports industry, we need institutional change and advocates at the top. If you’re in a position of power, how can you better advocate for your employees’ mental health?

There is a myriad of ways that change can be made at a company- or industry-wide level. A few ways (not inclusive) that I’ve been brainstorming:

  • Teams should be given more budget for more headcount so that people can take more time off.

  • Managers should not appear online after hours so that they don’t set an unfair precedent for their employees.

  • Companies should provide more mental health resources for all employees.

  • Stop expecting lower-level employees to always be able to see signs of burnout. Place more responsibility on people managers and people teams; put out better processes to spot signs of burnout.

How are you feeling about the sports industry this week?

Programming note: Next week is a tough personal day for me, so I’ll most likely take the week off from this newsletter.
